How to measure your dog for a harness
A medium in one harness is not necessarily a medium in another. Start with your dog's measurements, then use the chart for the exact product you want.
Before you start
Have a flexible measuring tape and something to write on. If you use string instead, lay it flat against a ruler afterward. Measure with your dog standing naturally, and keep the units from the product chart beside your notes.
1. Measure the chest
Wrap the tape around the widest part of the chest, behind the front legs. Keep it level and resting against the coat without pulling tight. Write down the circumference and repeat the measurement to catch a slipped tape.
A chart may call this measurement chest or girth. It means the distance all the way around, not the width across the front of your dog.
2. Measure the neck where the chart shows
Follow the product's measurement diagram. For the K9 Strike Vest, measure around the base of the neck. Do not substitute the length of an old collar or assume every harness sits at the same point.
If the chart includes back length, check its illustrated start and end points too. Do not use body length as a replacement for chest circumference.
3. Match every required measurement
Compare chest and neck together. If one measurement fits M and the other only fits L, do not choose by breed, weight, or the letter on the label. Ask for help before buying.
Keep inches and centimeters separate: one inch equals 2.54 cm. Do not add an arbitrary allowance to the chart; follow the instructions for that harness.
Between sizes? Pause before ordering
Sizing up is not an automatic solution. A larger harness may accommodate the chest but leave too much space around the neck. Send the product name and both measurements to support@greywolfgear.co so we can check the listed ranges with you.
The Strike Vest supplier chart has overlapping ranges. Its L and XL neck ranges do not increase consistently, so check the original diagram and contact us if your measurements sit near a limit.
Common harness-sizing mistakes
- Ordering the same letter size as a different brand or model.
- Using breed or body weight instead of chest and neck measurements.
- Reading an inch chart as centimeters.
- Matching only the chest and overlooking the neck.
- Assuming every item in a matching set has the same adjustment range.
Before the first walk
Follow the harness instructions and adjust it indoors first. Check that it is not pinching, rubbing, or slipping as your dog moves. If the fit is unclear, get help before relying on it outside. This guide does not replace the instructions for the product you receive.
